Kent PALMER was born in Lakenheath ( Mildenhall Q2-1892 4A:16) son of Albert Victor and Sarah PALMER (née ROLPH).
. 1901 census... Aged 8, Kent was at Hockwold Fen with his father Albert V PALMER [32] a farmer born Lakenheath; his mother Sarah [36] born Lakenheath; half-sister Caroline ROLPH[16] born Lakenheath; brothers William [6] born Lakenheath and George [3] born in Hockwold; sisters Lily Mary [2] and Rosina Maud [2 months] both born in Hockwold. 1911 census... Aged 18, Kent was a groom, living with the Perry family at 1 Kimberley Terrace, Church Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex. His parents were now at the New Inn, Hockwold , with George, Rosina, Gertrude [8],and Doris [6], the latter two being born in Hockwold. Two of their eight children had died, William and Lily. |

During the Battle of Loos in 1915, close fighting was renewed in the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 1st October, and all but Big Willie Trench was lost to the enemy. 12th (Eastern) Division relieved
1st and 2nd Guards Brigades in area of the Chalk Pit. They were put to work on completing preparations of new trenches, roads and positions in preparation
for an assault. Heavy enemy shelling caused many casualties among the working parties. Six men of the 7th Norfolks lost their lives on 1st October, not one has an identified grave, all are named on the Loos Memorial at Dud Corner Cemetery. |
